And it's Tuesday...anyone for PIE??

I know that's not what the day is about, and it's another silly thing - I mean, just an excuse to have pie, right??  but hey, pie is always good, and pie with ice cream is even better.  Everyone tells the same jokes today, right?

 Like there was a kid who went to college from a red neck town, and when he graduated with a math degree, everyone went to his house to celebrate and congratulate him.  While there, they said say something math!  So he thought for a moment and then said PI r Squared.   They all frowned, shook their heads and started leaving.  one of them stopped and said, "Well, that education didn't do you any good at all.  Everyone knows Pie are round."

Anyway - some other things are fun about the day too, but just as a plug for my daughters employment (part time at Kneaders) their pies are half price today - you might want to grab one.    (Update - I was wrong!!  Apparently either I mis-understood what she said, or she didn't say what she thought she did - grrrr...  anyway, they aren't half price.  The slices are 'technically' half price, but not the whole pie.  Sorry :(    )

International Ask A Question Day - Interesting that they would have a day for this.  Do we discourage people that much in asking questions?  I know that several times I've seen sped students have goals about asking for help.  Perhaps we discourage asking questions in striving for independence.  Not sure...but if you have a question, todays the day to ask it.  I like the question in Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy...actually, I like the answer to it better.  If you haven't seen it, here's the clip...



Organize Your Home Office Day - I guess if you work from home, or you have the need for an office, it's easy for it to get messed up.  I know I have to clean my desk off at home at least once a month. I can keep my desk at work spotless!  What's up with that??  sigh.  Let's get organized, people!  lol  right....

Potato Chip Day - no idea why they picked today to celebrate it...but it's been around for a while.  It was invented by a Chef named Crum because a customer complained about his thick french fries.  Really???  I LOVE thick french fries...  sigh.  Well, if you like potato chips, have at it people.  Munch away.  Personally I like the ruffles kind...and BBQ is yummy. 

Pi Day (as in the math pie = 3.14159265 etc.) - So, if you're a math fanatic, or like it at all, this day gives you a day to be proud.  I think it's funny how the numbers on a calendar give an excuse to celebrate something.  My niece was going to get married on 8-9-10 that year just because of the date.  sigh.  Anyway - Pi...it's all Greek to me!  lol

National Pie Day - I like this one better.  Pie is always good, like I said above.  :)   What's your favorite flavor?  I love the mixed berry one at Marie Calendar's too...  but homemade banana cream is awesome!  Here's a clip from Men in Black ...not sure if it's 2 or 3, but ya know... pie.



Save a Spider Day - really? I don't like spiders.  I'm not really afraid of them...at least that's what I tell myself.  Especially little ones...and if I see them outside, I try to let them live.  But if they're in my house??  No way!  One of our neighbors had one come down from the ceiling in church on Sunday, and they actually waited for the thing to land on the floor, scooped it up and took it outside.  Now that's a celestial person...sigh.  I'm afraid I wig out when I have a wolf spider show up.  And we get lots of them.  UGH.  it's that studio C one all over again...  Scorpion had one last night though that was similar... but sorry, no clips.  Just picture Happy shocking Toby on the chest because this honkin tarantula looking spider was on it....ugh

National Reuben Sandwich day - and last...reuben sandwiches.  I'm really not into these, I'm not a big fan of sauerkraut, so if you are, enjoy.

The Dragging Monday After....

I think you hear me say it every year...twice a year...though spring is worse for me than fall.  UGH  My whole week feels messed up.  I have to wrap my brain around the grogginess in my head and try to be awake.  Do you have that problem?? I feel groggy for the whole week.  Even now I'm sitting here, trying to eat my breakfast and feeling like there is a bag of sand in my eyes...  sigh.  Ok, I'm really awake...

Well, maybe we can use some inspiration to wake us up.    Here's what I have for today:

Donald Duck Day -   I always comment on this because my father-in-law loved Donald Duck.  He used to always talk for the kids with his Donald Duck voice and it always made them laugh.  My hubby inherited a stuffed duck with a similar hat that when you tap it it quacks.  Still makes the grandkids giggle.  sigh.  My father-in-law was one of a kind. 

Earmuffs Day -  For those of you who like the winter gear, have at it.  I never really did like ear muffs, but I guess they helped with cold ears.  I always wore a hood.  My granddaughter likes them though...  I guess those who live back east will really appreciate them, I understand they are in for another large snow storm.

Fill Our Staplers Day - twice a year? (they say it every Monday after daylight savings happens.) Is that the only time you have to fill your stapler?? I would think that was interesting.  I fill mine a lot, but then, I'm always using it.

Good Samaritan Involvement Day - I guess this is for those who need an excuse or a reason to do service for someone.  Everyone I personally know is already willing to jump in and help anyone in need.  You are all heros!

Ken Day - Well, we had Barbie day, I guess it's only fair that Ken gets his day.  sigh.  This whole equality thing is soooo silly sometimes.  Of course, who needs a day to celebrate the beginning of a doll???    Those that like the dolls, I guess.  

Napping Day - Please! I think every boss should tell everyone they need an hour to take naps this afternoon.  Don't you??  I mean, I'd say a half hour, but it takes me a half hour to fall asleep...got to have at least an hour...right?  sigh.  Sandra Boynton had her usual flair for the day...

National Open An Umbrella Indoors Day - Now this is another silly one...I mean, I guess if your the superstitious type, this is a big deal...but I open umbrellas inside all the time.  I don't need a special day to have fun with it.  How about you??

Smart & Sexy Day - aren't we all??  I guess this is to remind us that we are all smart And sexy.  Like that's a thing...lol. 

And last...
National Ginger Ale Day - Canada Dry is the best (according to my hubby).  We buy it when the world series is going on, because that's what he likes to go with his chili dog.  :)  Personally, I grew up with Ginger beer (non alcoholic stuff) ...but I can't drink it now...gives me heartburn!  So strange!  Anyway, here is a link to how to make your own ginger ale..

It's Friday! again...lol

Well, you made it, another week behind ya.  Looking forward to the weekend?  Could be a yard work weekend, depending on the weather.  Last I saw it was going to be 50's and partly cloudy.  That sounds like great outdoor weather to me, lol.

There are a couple of fun things for the day -

International Bagpipe Day - one of my favorite things, Bagpipes!!  It's been something cool in Bountiful, we'll be heading west on 4th north to get to the freeway, and about 6 pm in the summer, there is a group of bagpipers practicing on the grass by the bubble.  It's sooo much fun to hear them. 
The Piano Guys has a video clip of a version they've done that I want to share for the morning bagpipes.  Enjoy!

International Day of Awesomeness - “No one is perfect, but everyone can be awesome”   I think that's an awesome quote, lol.  I think this should be a day for me since I use that word quite frequently...as those who know me will attest.    But I do think all of you are awesome, so everyone shine today!  I think it's fun to note that they picked this day because it's Chuck Norris' birthday! 

 
 
They (the all knowing they) figured he was the epitomine of awesomeness, lol.  I guess that's a pretty good reason...especially when you note that article I shared about him visiting that young man.  I also think Kung Fu Panda is an awesome person too...does it matter that he's fiction?  

Land Line Telephone Day - I think it's interesting that they gave this a holiday.  There are lots of young people that don't even know what that means!  How many of you still have land lines?  We do...but we're die hards, lol.  How many even know what a party line is??  (Never had one, but I've heard of them.  I remember my parents used to tell me about the different phone numbers people used to have.  and when Utah was all 801, lol)

Mario Day - Do you know why it's Mario day today?  Simply because Mar 10 looks like Mario.  LOL  some people have only one thing on the brain...  So, if you're a Mario fan, have fun and play games today. 

Middle Name Pride Day - For the many of us who have middle names, this is the day you've waited for.  The name to proclaim to the world what your middle name is!  I think it's just to make them all feel better that their parents were wordy and wanted to keep on everyone's good side by giving children all the family names.  My family has a tradition with the male children...the oldest gets the mother's maiden name.  The second gets grandma's maiden, etc.  The only one they really get crazy about is the first born.  My kids lucked out...we didn't want any of them to be ____ Parker Parker.  sigh.  That's when having a different last name would really come in handy.

National Blueberry Popover day - If you don't know what a popover is, think Yorkshire pudding.  Basically it's a lighter biscuit that is served with something inside of it.  I don't think it's worth all the trouble, kind of like mini soufle?  But some people like them.  Have at it ...

National Pack Your Lunch day - This is something I do most every day.  How about you??  Did you bring your lunch today? I have leftover pizza.  Always a good thing.

Welcome to March!

Did it come in like a lamb or a lion?  I'm not sure if the snow storm we got counted as a lion, but it could have, and that means it should go out like a lamb, so I guess we'll see...

I haven't had the time to write this week till now because I've been so busy getting my books ready to get out, my website together and my links all hooked.  sigh.  Sometimes getting the thing out there is almost as time consuming as getting it written!!

there also hasn't really been much to celebrate on the silliness front, so that's been a delay too.  I wanted sooo bad to post Alex Boye's church basketball video...it's soooo funny!  Especially if your LDS and have seen anyone play church ball!!  I didn't realize that he'd posted it 5 years ago, but here you have it:



so...onto the other stuff.  :)

Barbie Day - which my cub scouts say are scary dolls, lol.  We went to the Layton City History museum last month, and there was a whole display case of barbie dolls in different outfits.  It freaked a couple of them out...  I grew up with Barbie dolls, but my granddaughter has these weird things called monster high dolls...that just don't look anything close to normal, and I guess that's better than the 'fake' barbie, right?  sigh.

Get Over It Day - I think this should be called Let it Go day, lol, but I guess this was started before that movie came out - who knows.  Apparently it was started by a guy named Jeff Goldblatt who was a TV anchor at one time and decided he needed a day get over a broken heart and move on.  He took the day off work and I guess other people liked the idea because it grew.  So get it off your chest and move on...Life is too short to dwell on stuff, right?

Nametag Day - celebrate your name! Are you proud of your name?  How did your parents decide on it?  My name is my grandmother's middle name...sigh.  I've never liked it, and I'm trying to do better, but it's not like Brittney or Sherie...I've always wanted some cutsie name.    I guess I'll grow up one day and accept it.  Anyway - do you like yours?  The whole point of this holiday is to encourage people to get to know each other by name and appreciate your own.

Panic Day - so apparently this is the day to give into all your panics and fears and freak out so that the rest of the time you can handle it.  The whole 'keep calm and keep on' thing isn't for today, lol.  What do you panic about??  Here's a fun Studio C one about spiders...


National Meatball day - So, if you like the food celebrations, this is a good one.  Remember the movie Will Smith did called Hancock and they have meatballs with dinner one night?  Those were some huge meatballs!!  I'm not real big on meatballs, but if you like them, have a good one! I was hoping to post the scene where they are having dinner and she brings out the meatballs, but I can't find it.  Think it's time to watch the movie again though...  :)

Still reining...

I said Snow was King in a previous post...well, it's keeping it's rein going!!  We woke up to powder that was awesome!  If I were a skier, I'd be loving life right now.  Anyway - I'm not a skier, and I don't particularly like to drive in it, but I'm settled for the day and so I can admire it through the window.  :)

Some of my writer friends live in areas that get snow days...  they've already had 17 or so days this year.  I have never seen a snow day, that I remember.  We've had delayed start...sigh.  It would be nice to have one, just once!!  

Oh well...Hope you had a great weekend!  We spent the majority of it babysitting grandkids at last minute.  It was fun for the most part...4 month olds just aren't always happy, ya know?  but at least he sleeps through the night.    And the other two were totally bored with the Swan Princess... sigh.


Anyway, some fun things -

International Polar Bear Day - apparently this is to raise awareness of the lack of ice for the polar bears.  There is a challenge to lower your thermostat so that less energy is used, yada yada.  I'm sorry, I'm one of those that aren't politically correct and while I agree that there is a warming trend, I do not think it's totally man made or that we can reverse it enough to stop what's happening. It's my opinion that the earth goes through cycles (science 101 according to gparker...), and this is yet another

National Cupcake Day (Canada) And mainly because my hubby is a wannabe Canadian (LDS Mission, lol) we always celebrate Canadian stuff - here's a great excuse to eat cake.  Which is all cupcakes are...mini cakes.  I just wish they were less messy to eat...  I think I'll just make cake and tell everyone to pretend it's a cupcake...they won't mind. 

and last...it's National Strawberry day! odd to have it in the middle of February, when it's not a growing season for most of the US...but ya know.  I guess we can still find them in the store.



Didn't most of us have the chocolate dipped variety a couple weeks ago?    Yum.

Snow is king!

I've heard nothing but complaints about the weather this week.  "Aren't we done with snow yet???" is the most common...  lol  Sorry folks, it's still winter in Utah, and the more snow we get, the more water in summer!  Which is a yeah all the way around.  Can I get an AMEN?  lol

Well...today there are a couple of fun items to enjoy...

Curling is Cool Day - I never heard about curling till the 2002 Olympics.  I still don't get the fascination with watching a bunch of guys sweeping ice before a large round stone that weighs a ton.  But hey...what is basically a cold version of shuffleboard and people love that game too.  I just don't get it.  I'd have to be REALLY bored to get into it.  I had to laugh because one of the recent episodes of Scorpion had them making their own curling 'court' and sliding the stones.  It's all a mental thing, I guess.  whatever...if you like it, enjoy. 

Digital Learning Day - big in our district right now, and most districts in Utah.  Almost everything is digital now...and just 15 years ago it was unusual to have a computer in a classroom.  Now it's expected, and usually you have more than one.  Let alone the advent of tablets and smart phones.  Crazy.

Diesel Engine Day - This is a nod to my husband's family.  He has a sister that lives pretty rural, an her boys are all into diesel engines.  One is actually a diesel mechanic.  I think they're loud and whatever...but those who like them swear by them. Kind of like the wonder kid in Knight and Day when he was playing with the big diesel train engine...   Which type of engine do you like?

Iwo Jima Day (flag raised) - Here's to all the brave men who faced down the horrors on the west coast.  What happened on this side of the planet was terrible too.  The men were just as brave who dealt with an army determined to win.  MidWay is a great movie tribute. We like to point out to our children how there was an upper hand in all of it...timing was everything.

National Dog Biscuit Day - I think most dogs would celebrate this in a heartbeat.  Anything to do with food, right?  They're on it like flies to... anything.  lol

National Chili Day - well, this is a good day to have when it's cold outside!  Have a chili cook off...surprise your family with the white bean chili.  Personally, there's nothing like the good old thick-more-meat-than-bean stuff with cheese and sour cream on top and corn bread on the side...yum.

Single Tasking Day - they say that we really don't ever multi task, it's just combining a bunch of tasks close together.  Apparently it's not good for our brain, it causes us to actually be less effective and efficient.  I feel that as a cook, that is where multi tasking is prime.  When you're making dinner and you want it to all be ready at the same time??  That takes multi-tasking!  Watch a chef at work and you'll see what I mean. (or a mother of more than one child running a household...  I mean, just having one child makes things challengin, but when you add another one - oh boy. And if that mother is working??  ever seen the movie Baby Boom?)

Well...if you are one of those not happy with the snow...I'm sorry, but we're supposed to keep getting some through next Monday.  If you are okay with it like me, well, enjoy!  Hopefully none of us will slide off the road.  Much as I like snow, it is the pits to drive in!!

We made it!!

It's Friday at last!  And for a long weekend too.  What could be better?  Going out of town!!  That's right, I'm taking my hubby out for Valentines.  Kids get to fend for themselves.  It's a good thing they're all adults, right? lol

Anyway - I'm excited.  He doesn't know that we're not really going anywhere, lol.  But hopefully he'll still have fun and relax.  He's been sooo stressed with work - poor man.  :(

So anyway - Today doesn't have much to celebrate other than that and that it's National Random Acts of Kindness Day.  Sandra Boynton posted a great one on her twitter...

She's so awesome.  Can't believe I've been collecting her stuff for over 30 years....  ugh.  Let's not go there, lol

Anyway - it's also Indian Pudding Day - which if you know your puddings, you'll know this is made of corn meal and has nothing to do with Indians.  sigh.  The stuff you learn when researching. 

And just to help get those feet moving and spirits rising, here's a couple of my favorites.    Turn up the volume and get everyone dancing!

It's that time again....

That's right, Valentine's Day!!!
                                    
One of my favorite days of the year.  Do you know that the card industry loves this holiday??  sigh.

I was looking up all the stuff going on today in Brownielocks, and I could not believe the celebrations going on today.  So, it's not just Valentines...and that means there are options for those who are bah-humbug about this day that everyone else likes to gush over.    (which would include me, lol)

National Creme Filled Chocolates day - of course.  But, personally, I don't like those kind.  Give me a dark chocolate Dove heart, and I'm happy.  :)

Extraterrestrial Culture Day and Extraterrestrial Visitor Day - I guess would be for those who are really into extraterrestials.  Ever seen the movie Escape to Witch Mountain? The new one with the Rock?  There's a convention in Las Vegas that would sooo go along with these two...lol.

Ferris Wheel Day - Who loves the ferris wheel??!!  Everyone raise your hand...well, except my daughter.  She hates the one at Lagoon because she's not really fond of heights.  I don't really like that it turns...but I can force myself to relax, lol.

International Book Giving Day - I hear that there's a country in Europe that has a tradition on Christmas Eve that they all give each other a book and sit up reading and eating chocolate.  I think this day could be another tradition to adopt.  I have a couple of books left of one that I illustrated should someone want a free book, lol.  Contact me and I'll get it to you.  Wish my other ones were at the point to give away...next year!!  :)  I also noticed that it doesn't have any reviews...if someone were to give me a review, that would be excellent!!  (I'll give you a free copy of my book that I'm writing. )

Library Lovers Day - this would go along with the book giving day, don't you think?  I love libraries...I could spend hours there, which is the problem.  I was telling someone the other day, I have to look up the book I want online and then go and pick it up so I don't spend the rest of the day there...  sigh.

League of Women Voters Day - women have come a long way since this time when they had to push the rights to vote.  We owe these women a great debt of thanks.  What I didn't know is that they are still in action.  Here's a link to the group in Utah... http://www.lwvutah.org/

And for those who aren't married, have a significant other or aren't dating at all...Singles Awareness Day or Singles Appreciation Day and Quirky Alone Day - that means they have something to celebrate, even if they don't get the hearts and roses.  They can buy themselves candy and say they deserve it, right?  My hubby always gets my daughters a valentine.  I wish men weren't so blind... (for my daughters!)  Although this is another reason some people are still alone, lol

And lastly...Valentines Day!  One of the biggest flower, candy and gift days of the year.  My sister-in-law works for Jimmy's flowers and she's a crazy busy woman the week before Valentines day. I hate how they jack up the cost of roses for that time -- you can get a dozen roses for less than $20 any other time!  But I was telling my hubby yesterday, every day is valentine's day with him.  It's just fun to be silly and spread the cheer.

I think it's a great day to watch one of my favorite movies...  The Mirror Has Two Faces.  It gives those who are lonely a hope for love.  :)

So - no matter what your thoughts are on the day, if you're a teacher and have to deal with sugar buzzed kids, or a parent with emotional train wreaks or single and lonely depression, I hope you find something to celebrate in this day.  The sky is blue and the world is a wonderful place because you are in it!!

Happy Wet Tuesday...

Okay, it didn't really rain much yesterday, so it's making up for it today.  I hope everyone remembered their umbrellas!  I'll try to keep this short and entertaining, I know we're all busy!!  But hey, got to take a minute to smile! 

We're having our cub scout Blue and Gold tonight, and one of the leaders sent out a text asking if we needed her to get anything.  I said I needed a brain.  The cub master sent back..."pay no attention to what is going on behind the curtain,"  lol.   I think we have entirely too much fun. 

So...today there are a couple of fun things.

It's National Ballet Day - if you like Ballet, you probably already knew this.  I didn't know it had a celebration day!  So - what's your favorite ballet?  Mine is probably the Nutcracker.  Swan Lake is supposed to be really good...  Haven't really seen one live other than the Nutcracker.  Personally, I think the best one is with Baryshnikov...  "e" Day (math)  - this is related to math, as in "Today, 2/7, is celebrated as "e" Day, since the first 2 digits in the number "e" are 2 and 7."  Those of you teaching math could toss that bit of trivia out to your students and see what they think, lol.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Day - One of my favorite series of books of all time!!!  I grew up reading all the Little House on the Prairie books.  I loved them.  Loved the illustrations, the stories, the simple life.  The television series created from it was fun, but not the same.    How many of you read those books?  I hope to have my granddaughters read them...but with the tastes of kids now a days, she'd probably be bored. 

National Periodic Table Day - we had a math celebration, now you can do chemistry.  Whoever came up with this one...sigh.  I even took chemistry, but I was also known for lighting the beakers on fire... 

Wave All Your Fingers At Your Neighbor's Day - I guess this is to prove you are nice neighbors and are refraining from waving only 1 or 2 fingers??  Who knows, I thought it was silly. 

And last, but definitely one of my favorites... National Fettuccine Alfredo Day!  One of the best noodle dishes ever invented...sigh.  Imagine my shock when I found out that the base of the sauce is heavy cream! and lots of butter...no wonder it tastes so good.  lol.   Anyway...

It's Monday and it's a great day!

Hope you had a great weekend!  If you are super bowl fans apparently it was quite the game (we never watch it).  If you aren't, well, we know how to have fun, right?  We played a wild game of Wizard (which is sort of like Mormon Bridge...) lol.  I hear the best thing about it is the commercials. :)


Just a couple of things...first,Brownielocks says it's Canadian Maple Syrup day...which is actually a bit international, and not exactly promoting US, but we like Canada, right??  And hey, maple syrup is good stuff, no matter which side of the border it comes from.  Do you ever use it in cooking?  It's a good alternative for some sugar items.  Anyway - you could have waffles for dinner and have syrup!  good stuff.

And also, it's Frozen Yogurt day!  That's a yummy idea too.  We haven't gotten frozen yogurt in a long time, and my hubby got some for the boys when they got their wisdom teeth out.  I'd forgotten how good it is!  So, go grab a pint and enjoy on the waffles!  YUM.

It's supposed to be rainy today - which keeps that old line from the Carpenters song going...  "Rainy days and Mondays..."  but they don't get me down, and I hope they don't get you down either.  Have a great day!!

And if you go by that stuff...we are apparently in for a longer winter...  but if you go by "Sunset Sam" in Utah, we're in for an early spring, since he didn't see his shadow here. 
So, I'm sure most of you will want to go by that one...  We ALWAYS watch Goundhog Day with Bill Murray.  Do you have any traditions for this silly day?

It's also National Crepe Day!!  We love crepes at my house.  If they weren't so time consuming to cook (hey, we need like 30!!) we'd make them more.  We love them with meat and cheese fillings or with desert fillings and whipped topping...just about anyway you can fix them.  (well, except for raisins- and if you haven't seen Mouse Hunt, you won't know what I'm talking about, lol)
The French celebrate this day as La Chandeleur - apparently something to do with Mary presenting Christ to the temple...though it's also supposed to have something to do with ending winter and looking for spring.  I don't think the human race has ever really liked winter for very long, lol.

Sled Dog Day - Kind of a fun day - if you weren't going to be watching Goundhog day, you could always watch Balto...that's a good one.  My kids still quote it...  sigh.  Here's one of their favorite scenes...  And did you know that Phil Collins was the voice of these two bears?  It's hilarious. 


and last we acknowledge that today is also World Play Your Ukulele Day.  If I had a ukulele I would play it, but since I don't...well, you'll just have to play yours. 
Or...you can watch this clip from 50 First Dates of Adam Sandler playing one.  I'm not a big fan of his, but this was a cute move (if you could drop the crazy friend and the brother...sigh)
